Name Your E-Newsletter
The publication’s name should “hook” a reader. The name should be relevant to the contents of the publication. Your e-newsletter should discuss Marathon Running if that is what you promised. I’m not interested in luggage or a racing bike; I’m interested in long-distance running.
Example: The newsletter title “The Fine Art of Endurance Running” gets my attention. Or, “Endurance Running” should work. Trying to be all things to all people with a title like “Moving Along” or, “In the Fast Lane” isn’t likely to keep readers coming back for more. Vague titles don’t help you either. They give you permission to stray and write about luggage or a racing bike!
Before you select the newsletter title, consider whether you can meet the criterion just mentioned. Do you need to expand the title? Provide a subtitle? Can you fulfill on the promise? Perhaps the publication schedule should be monthly as opposed to weekly or daily.
Catchy names are memorable. Try using alliteration and see what you can create. Consider words that rhyme and names that sound funny.
Exude authority. Words such as Digest, Report, Letter, Bulletin, Newsletter, and Reporter might help to convey the image you want. Don’t hesitate to reach for a thesaurus as you search.
Short and sweet titles suggest the reader can glean information quickly. This promise appeals to readers who believe they have too much to read. Who among your potential subscribers doesn’t feel that way?
Finally, you may find yourself changing the title more than once before you are satisfied. I don’t write this to discourage you but to underscore the importance of the newsletter title. It’s wasteful to start off with an unsatisfactory title but it’s far more wasteful to hang onto it and let it become the proverbial albatross around your neck. Is the title already in use? That could be a red flag. If in doubt as to whether you can use it, check with your legal expert.
